What is a Board Certified Specialist

Dr. Gary Thompson is a Board Certified Specialist in Canine and Feline Practice, but what does that mean? Veterinary medicine has an assortment of specialists similar to those in human medicine (i.e. cardiologist, radiologist, surgeons, etc.). Canine and feline practice is one of more than 20 specialties currently recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).

Specialty certification requires completing 3 to 6 years of training in the area of specialization beyond the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. Applicants must complete comprehensive training as well as submit proof of expertise to a review board in their specialty college. Once approved, they then earn the title of “Board Certified Specialist” or “diplomate” of the respective college.

Enhancing Pet Lives with Advanced Surgery

Our Board Certified Specialist, Dr. Thompson, has advanced training in veterinary surgical services. We are the only hospital in the Toledo, OH area that can perform multiple procedures designed to help dogs with knee (CCL) injures. In addition, Dr. Thompson is able to perform arthroscopy, a minimally invasive procedure used to visualize, diagnose and treat joint problems.
